Almost, Maine by John Cariani

Hath Summer Players - July 2026

About the Show

On a clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not what it seems in the remote town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways.

Almost, Maine was performed for Hath Summer Players, a training program for young actors aged 13-23. Much of the direction of this play was guided towards teaching specific aspects of acting for the students. For many of these actors, it was their first experience working on Intimacy on Stage, and how we direct intimacy in a safe and supportive environment. There was also a large focus on intentional silence. We did a lot of work getting comfortable sitting and acting through silence that Cariani notes in the script.

Direction and Themes

Almost, Maine is a play about love and all of the ways it manifests. Sometimes it is messy, sometimes sweet, sometimes complicated, sometimes easy. What I adore about Almost, Maine is how it isn’t trying to be an over-the-top romantic comedy, with sweeping declarations and easy endings where everything works out. Instead, Almost, Maine depicts the small moments. The moments where you develop a crush. The moments where you realize it’s time to say goodbye. The moments where you realized you hurt the person you love, and the moments where you make it up to them. A play that takes place in the same 10 minutes of one night in Northern Maine manages to capture so many beautifully intricate truths regarding relationships.
